Hopping Bunny Rabbit Craft

This cute rabbit craft is so easy that your little ones can make a whole field of them in all different colours! The bunny rocks backwards and forwards so children can have fun pretending it’s jumping and frolicking around. This is a great craft for Easter or spring themes, or simply for a fun and creative afternoon.

This easy-to-make rabbit craft doesn’t require many materials, making it perfect for both home and classroom settings. plus you can download the FREE bunny template (the download box is at the end of the post) to make crafting it even simpler!

How to make the Hopping Bunny Rabbit Craft:

1. Prepare the tube: Cut the toilet roll tube in half. If you’re using a kitchen roll tube, cut it into four equal-length pieces. I used a toilet roll tube that measured about 4.5 cm in diameter – I found the bunny rocks better on these wider tubes than on the narrower ones.

2. Cut out the bunny shapes: Download the rabbit craft template (see end of post for download box). Print or trace the template pieces onto cardstock and cut them out.

3. Decorate the bunny’s face: Draw the bunny’s face and paws using a black pen. Cut some rounded strips of decorative paper for the inner ears and stick them on. You can also cut a small bow shape from glitter card and attach it to the bunny’s head for a cute touch!

4. Attach the bunny’s body: Stick a couple of strips of double-sided sticky tape onto the toilet roll tube, as shown in the photo below.

Peel off the backing and attach the bunny’s body. You could use glue, but I’ve found the body doesn’t stick or stay on as well. Fold up the ends of the legs to make the paws.

5. Make the bunny’s neck: Take the strip of card and fold it like an accordion, with three folds. Glue one end to the head and the other to the body. To help the head stay up better, glue the accordion strip to the head with the end pointing upwards rather than down, as shown in the photo.

6. Add the tail: Cut a cotton ball in half and glue one piece to the back of the bunny to make a tail – or use a small pompom.

7. Let the bunny hop! Your cute little bunny is finished! Place it on a flat surface and gently tap it to make it rock back and forth like a hopping bunny.

As well as being a fun project, this rabbit craft can also be used in playful and educational ways for preschool and kindergarten-aged children. Here are some ideas:

• Bunny “races”: Have children gently tap their bunnies to see which one rocks the farthest. This is a fun way to encourage turn-taking and fine motor skills.
• Colour sorting: If kids make bunnies in different colours, use them for a colour recognition activity. Ask them to group the bunnies by colour or name the colours aloud.
• Counting activity: Line up the bunnies and count them together as a group. This works especially well in a classroom setting with multiple children.
• Storytime props: Use the bunnies as characters in a simple story about a field of playful rabbits. Kids can act out parts of the story with their own crafted bunnies.
• Sensory Play: Add the bunnies to a sensory tray filled with shredded paper ‘grass’ and other springtime elements to create a mini rabbit world!

Tie-In Activities for the Hopping Bunny Craft:

• Storytime – Read books about rabbits, such as Home for a Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown, Pat the Bunny by Dorothy Kunhardt, or Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney.
• Bunny Movement Fun – Have kids hop like bunnies in a movement game or obstacle course to encourage active play.
• Springtime Art & Nature – Draw or paint a spring scene featuring bunnies, flowers, and baby animals.

If you’re teaching English as a second language (ESL) to preschoolers, this craft can be a fantastic tool for vocabulary building and interactive learning. Here’s how you can incorporate it into a lesson:

• Animal vocabulary: Teach words like rabbit, ears, tail, hop, and jump. Have kids point to the parts of the bunny as they say the words.
• Action words: Introduce action verbs like cut, stick, fold, and glue while making the craft. This helps young learners connect language with hands-on activities.
• Simple sentences: Encourage children to say short sentences like “My rabbit is pink” or “The rabbit can hop” to practice speaking in English.
• Following directions: Give simple step-by-step instructions for the craft to help children practice listening skills in English.
• Question & answer: Ask questions like “What colour is your rabbit?” or “Where is the rabbit’s tail?” to encourage conversation.

Interactive Ideas:

• Bunny Hop Game – Call out action words like “jump,” “hop,” “run,” and “stop,” and have kids act them out like a bunny.
• Find the Bunny – Hide a small paper bunny in the room and give simple clues in English (e.g., “It’s under the chair!”) to help children find it.
• Bunny Colour Sorting – For group classes, invite children to put their bunnies into different groups according to colour, then count how many bunnies of each colour there are.
• What Do Bunnies Eat? – Show pictures of different foods and have kids say “yes” or “no” to whether a bunny would eat them (e.g., “Carrot?” – Yes! “Pizza?” – No!).
