Easy St. Patrick’s Day Craft for Kids – Super Fun Optical Toy!

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated every March 17th to commemorate the death of Ireland’s patron saint. It is a celebration that has grown in popularity in recent years and has been adopted by many countries outside of Ireland, thanks to globalization and the movement of people around the world. It is now a worldwide festival—in fact, according to Wikipedia, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival!

To commemorate the occasion, here’s a really easy St Patrick’s Day craft you can do with kids of all ages! It’s an optical toy called a thaumotrope, which was invented hundreds of years ago and consists of a disc with a design on each side. When you spin the disc, it gives the illusion that the images on both sides blend into one. My Earth Day Thaumotrope proved to be very popular, so I decided to make this St Patrick’s Day version with a pot of gold that magically appears at the end of the rainbow!

I’ve included a FREE template for the thaumotrope; you can find the download box at the end of the tutorial. In order to save paper, there two copies per page. I’ve also included a blank disc if you want kids to experiment with their own design – instead of a pot of gold they could draw a shamrock, a horseshoe or a leprechaun!

How to make the St Patrick’s Day Craft Thaumotrope:

1. Download and print the template: Grab the free template (see the download box at the end of the tutorial) and print the thaumotrope onto white cardstock. There are two copies per page, so one page will do for two kids.
2. Colour the designs: Colour in two discs – one with a rainbow and the other with a pot of gold. Encourage kids to use bright, vibrant colours to make the illusion even more exciting!

3. Cut out the discs and attach the stick: Carefully cut out both discs. Use some sticky tape to fix a wooden kebab stick to the back of the pot of gold disc. Ensure the stick is aligned so that the design is straight when held up. Very young kids may need help with this step.

It’s a good idea to use masking tape, as you can peel it off and re-stick it easily. You could also use a pen to mark a little dot on the bottom of the disc, which will help kids see where to fix the stick.

4. Glue the two discs together: Apply glue to the back of the rainbow disc and press it onto the pot of gold disc, sandwiching the kebab stick between them. Make sure the designs are aligned correctly before the glue dries – again, young children may need help with this step to ensure everything lines up properly.

This unique St. Patrick’s Day craft is captivating for children. It’s also a great way to combine art and science by encouraging an early understanding of visual perception, so it’s a great addition to your preschool and kindergarten lessons! Here are some fun and simple ways to use it in young learners’ classrooms:

• Exploring colours: Talk about the bright colours of the rainbow and help children identify different colours in their designs.
• St. Patrick’s storytime fun: After making their thaumatropes, children can tell a simple story about a leprechaun and their pot of gold, encouraging language development and imagination.
• Magic trick excitement: Present the thaumatrope as a “magic trick” and ask children what they think will happen before they spin it!
• Hand-Eye coordination & fine motor skills: Cutting, gluing, and spinning the thaumatrope help little hands develop important coordination and dexterity skills.

This craft is also a fantastic tool for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to young learners! Here’s how:

• Vocabulary building: Teach simple St. Patrick’s Day words like rainbow, gold, and pot, as well as other relevant words such as cut, colour, spin, and stick while children make their crafts.
• Listening practice: Give step-by-step instructions using clear, simple language to help kids practice listening and understanding.
• Speaking practice: Have children describe their thaumatrope using simple phrases like “I see a rainbow!” or “I see gold!”
• Simple questions and answers: Ask young learners yes/no or simple choice questions like “What are the colours on the rainbow?” or “Can you see the gold?”
