Alphabet Stars – Letter Recognition Cards

FacebookTwitter
Spanish Version

These FREE printable alphabet stars are so simple yet so versatile! You can use them to play a myriad of different games and activities to teach letter recognition, letter sounds and spelling with preschoolers and kindergarteners. Try any of the games in this article, plus I’ve also included some more ideas below. You can probably think of many more ideas too – the possibilities are endless! They are perfect to tie in with an Outer Space unit, or a Twinkle Twinkle Little Star theme, but I think they’re great to use any time of the year!

The stars are not colour-coded – this is so that you have the option to make matching the upper case and lower case letters more challenging. If you want to use them with 3 year olds who are only just starting to learn their letters you may like to colour code them yourself to make it easier for the children to differentiate. For example, you can add coloured stickers to the lower case cards, or choose two different colours of cardstock and mount the upper case cards on one colour and the lower case cards on the other colour before laminating.

I have other resources related to SPACE, as well as some other fun printables to practice PHONICS and LETTER SOUNDS that you might like to try. See the end of the post for more!

How to make and use the Alphabet Stars:

  • Download the free template (see the download box at the end of the post) and print the stars onto photo paper or cardstock for printers.
  • You can cut the stars into square cards using the guidelines, or cut around each star individually (more work, but looks cute!)
  • Mount them on cardstock if you wish. I also highly recommend laminating them to make them more durable.

Games and activities for letter recognition and spelling:

Match Up

Stick the upper case stars around the room. Give each child a lower case star and have them find the matching upper case letter.

Magnetic Letter Stars

Stick small adhesive magnets to the back of each star and use them for different spelling activities on a baking tray or the fridge.

Swallowed magnets consitute a medical emergency.

Do not allow young children to play with magnetic toys unsupervised.

Simple Spelling

Show your child a written word and invite him or her to spell it using the star cards.

Anagrams

This is more suitable for children of kindergarten age or older. Put all the letters of a word into a bag. Ask your child to take them out and arrange the letters in the correct order to spell the word. You could give a clue by showing a picture of the word they have to spell.
