Crawling Spider Craft

FacebookTwitter

This cute spider craft is a really easy for little ones to make. It’s designed so kids use their hands to make it crawl, but they could just wear it as a bracelet!

It’s an ideal non- spooky Halloween craft for young children, but also works well if you’re teaching bug units, parts of the body or as an Itsy Bitsy Spider activity! I always have my kids count the legs and practise the numbers 1 -8 too.

I’ve provided a printable template for download at the end of the post, including template pages for groups. If you’re making black spiders you’ll need to print it, cut out the pieces and trace them onto black card using white pencil or crayon. If you’re making spiders in another colour you can just print the templates directly onto coloured cardstock.

I have loads of other fun HALLOWEEN related crafts and resources that you might also like to try. See the end of the post for more!

Supplies

  • Black card
  • 2 pipe cleaners per spider
  • Hair band
  • Single hole punch
  • Stapler
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes or adhesive eyes
  • Stickers or sticky gems

How to make the Crawling Spider Craft:

1. Take some black card and cut one circle 7-8 cm diameter and another circle about 4cm diameter. You can also print the template and trace it onto black card using a white pencil or crayon, or just print directly onto cardstock if you want to make different coloured spiders.

2. Stick the head onto the body.

3. Punch four holes down each side of the body.

4. Cut 2 pipe cleaners in half and in half again, so you have eight pieces.

5. Thread a piece of pipe cleaner into a hole and fold over one end to secure in place. Repeat with all the legs.

6. Turn the spider over and staple the hair band to the middle of the body.

7. Turn the spider right side up, add some eyes and decorate with stickers and sticky gems.

8. The crawling spider is finished! Now just slide your hand through the hair band and make it run around!

Advice for small group classes:

This is a simple craft that takes about 20 mins to complete, depending on age and group size. Three and four year olds will probably have trouble cutting the heads accurately as the circles are quite small, so you may want to pre-cut them beforehand.

Some tips:

  • For very young kids, pre-cut the spider heads beforehand.
  • You may like to mark dots on the spider body to help children punch the holes in the correct place.
