Painting Techniques: If you want to take it up a notch, why not try experimenting with different painting techniques? I’ve tested a few techniques that have worked wonderfully and kept my kids entertained for ages!

• Wax Crayon Resist with Watercolours: This is also known as “magic painting.” Simply use a white wax crayon to draw or write on the template before painting over it with watercolour paints. The crayon will resist the paint, revealing fun patterns and designs underneath.
• Tape Resist with Watercolours: Add masking tape to the template in various shapes and designs. After applying watercolours, carefully remove the tape to reveal crisp, clean edges and fun patterns.
• Sticker Resist Painting: Use stickers on the paper before painting, then peel them off after the paint dries for a fun effect.

Collage: For a more tactile experience, you can switch things up by using crayons, paints, tissue paper, cotton wool, and stickers to create a textured collage. Add real fabric scraps, yarn, or buttons to give the clothes a 3D effect!

A Little More About the “Magic Painting” Technique

One of the best techniques we tried in class was the wax crayon resist method, and my kids enjoyed it the most! As soon as the crayon marks were covered by watercolors, the magic happened. The bright, vibrant colours contrasted beautifully with the white wax marks, and the kids were absolutely fascinated by the result. They loved watching the designs emerge and couldn’t wait to try out new patterns. They did some great work!
